i agree that a ship that retreats in the face of bad odds is doing the right thing...though the Admiralty would probably court martial the captain anyway...but retreating because the game times out is not valid...time frame of the game is sketchy...but we can assume that the turns are probably on the order of five to maybe ten minutes...stern chases could last for hours and it was unheard of for a ship that is clearly overhauling a crippled enemy to turn aways after an hour's chase
Yes, I do agree, though, it COULD be there are more ships just off the map supporting these ships, and so on. So, you couldn't chase a ship forever, they would reach port, maybe there is land nearby with guns, who knows. The question would be how the game (or computer) can know that this is happening, that would be the challenge. As otherwise, if the game did not time out, who's to say for the next 10 years the game could keep going on! It's not just a matter of comparing speeds of ships, as, it could be one ship is upwind and the other side can't move upwind.
So, I think it's more for programming convenience. But, I do agree it is frustrating to "lose" based on a timeout when you are catching them! I have won and lost that way. |
