Come'on guys look at the topic theme - it was intended to be just a proposition... However the resistance to the idea of changing something in scoring system is significant, perhaps the reminiscence of last attempt to do it is still too traumatic.
The significance, beyond the mere scoring fiasco recently encountered, is that most of us replying to these posts were intimately involved in the testing phase for the upcoming release of the Basic Rules. We've been through the ringer in suggesting implementations beyond those already extant.
The determination made early was to keep the game as close to the original version of the game as it was when released in 1976. This was because the original rules, although "unrealistic" (justifiably so!) for the purist, provide the basis for a fun, competitive game. Scoring is similar to a sporting event, and is not meant to recreate an historical footnote. There are many rule sets out there whose complexity may satisfy the die-hard, but keeping this game in its original simplicity is the goal.
After all, if an historical battle ended with a score of 144-143, there wouldn't be ANY winners! The historical winner would be the Captain obtaining the stategic goals, higher points or not. That would would take it far beyond the scope of the simple tactical exercise WSIM is meant to be.
And, it must work. We all keep coming back here, don't we?
Micha, as much as we disagree, I am salivating for the implementation of the full-sail rules. No pun intenteded, but that would force a sea-change in everyone's approach to the tactics used in EVERY scenario, and give frigates a huge boost in their value to the commanding player! Repairs, of course, would also be very useful.
You can tell I'm bored this Saturday afternoon! We've been through this so many times...
