There is this issue that a SOL on battle sails cannot move in a light breeze, but it can move with full sails. However, a ship that did not move in the previous turn is required to move one hex straight in order to change to full sails. Hence once a SOL with battle sails stops, it is unable to change to full sails, and is left immobile until the wind increases.
As far as I understand, this is in accordance with the original rules, so fixing it needs a house rule. But I think it needs fixing, as it is one of those (quite few) things that both makes no sense and affects game play in a negative way.
I am not sure what the best house rule would be, but perhaps someone already knows of one that works well? It is also a question of what is easiest to implement, of course.
If the idea behind the original rule is that a ship will need some time to pick up speed, then perhaps a fix would be to say that IF a ship did not move in the previous turn AND does not move in a straight line in the current turn, THEN it may nevertheless change to full sails, but will only be allowed to use its battle sails movement factors in the following turn.. |
