Actually, my recollection is Pbass asked the game developer, who said it was correct.
Points in the original game are not actually clear. What the crew hits section says is "the ship cannot be moved or used in combat", which to me more means firing as there is no one to shoot the guns. It also says "Excess crew hits are treated as misses", almost implying the ship CAN take more damage. I honestly don't think you score ANYTHING, unless I am missing something. You could board it and therefore take the points, but, there is no boarding in the simplified game. But capturing it DOES score double points in the original rules. See XI.B.3. So, ships certainly do score double, and, the question is how to treat these ships in a game where there is no boarding.
My 2 cents which is what it is worth is don't score ANYTHING for killing the crew, only score if targeted and sunk or in the basic game, boarded. After all, presumably, you can add minimal crew after the battle is done and sail the ship home.
