I can't contribute anything to the question about bugs, so I will focus on the rules, which do not seem to be very clear on the issue. They do say that (A) if several OBPs are boarding the same ship, their total melee strengths are added together, and (B) if two opposing ships are sending OBPs to capture each other, they must melee. This could be taken to mean that the code is correct, so to speak, i.e. that in the example you mention the OBPs that cross path should be resolved as separated melees first, before combining OBPs. Or it could be taken to mean that OBPs should always be combined, when targeted at the same ship. I used to think the latter, but even in the board game that leads to a bit of a mess when lots of ships are grapled together. Say French ships F1, F2, F3 all attack English ship E1, while E1 together with English ship E2 together attack F1. How would this be resolved?

This is an interesting question, as it is NOT specified in the board games' rules at all as far as i remember.
The board game has only 2 Player scenarios, and having a 3rd or 4th Nation in a battle was never addressed.

I guess you would do the "join both OBPs together" to see if the defenders were forced to surrender. Casualties to the combined OBP would be taken half from each Nation, with the larger taking any extra losses. If the defenders end up surrendering, maybe then the 2 Nations' OBPs would melee on the surrendered Ship as if the 2 Ships were boarding each other with OBPs.

A rule would need to be invented for this occurrence...

  • Right, the 3+ nations case isn't covered, and one will have to make a rule, that seems clear.

But before doing so, I am not sure there is agreeement on what the rules say one should do in the standard 2 player setting. In the quoted example for instance, if you go for the always-combine-OBPs-approach you would end up with one big melee with F1+F2+F3 against E1+E2, even though E2 and F3 need not even be adjacent, and that seems a bit odd. And complicated. An advantage of the first-resolve-OBPs-that-cross-paths-approach is that it is simpler, OBPs would then only be combined against DBPs.
