Yep, Steve... the term is KISS. Do I need to provide what this stands for, some of you?

I have the rules for Heart of Oak. I fail to see how such more "realistic" games could ever see thw light of day for online gaming. Or for board or miniatures gaming either Who has the time to go over all of this junk? And this is supposed to be a miniatures ruleset, as well.

What, fanatical realists? Read the Qur'an to bring peace to your infidel heart!

WS&IM provides a simplistic rules system, and has been adapted brilliantly for online gaming. Real, hell no! It's fun, though, and challenging. You guys who want to worry about "realism" start from scratch with a new game. You don't seem to get it.

BTW, there have been some interesing posts on this thread. I understand Chiggy's question, but still suggest that this be considered a game, and not a replication of warfare under sail.

No one has suggested that Heart of Oak or any other game be put on-line. However, it would be quite possible to implement any number of games which are more detailed than WSIM. It is only a matter of finding the people willing to devote the time to the effort.

Well, I did, along with at least ten other people I know, some of whom also play on this site, and at least another two dozen people with whom I have played the game. Anyone who is interested in historic gaming within the age of sail would want to take the time to learn rule systems which are more accurate and advanced that WSIM.

What, fanatical realists?
ChiggyVonR is a “fanatical realist” for wondering if a historical wargame corresponds to history? And I am a “fanatical realist” for pointing out the sever inadequacies of WSIM as such?

I thing the “brilliantly” can be argued, but it is an ok implementation.

Sorry, buster … it is YOU who don’t “get it”.
  • First, the discussion is not, as you imply, about knocking this site or about whether or not WSIM is a fun game. The discussion is about whether or not WSIM implements the history upon which it is supposedly based. And, in that respect, WSIM is a very bad representation.
  • Second, there is no need to create a new game. There are a number of good games available, one of which you noted, that do a good job of representing the age of sail.

I understand ChiggyVonR's question, but still suggest that this be considered a game, and not a replication of warfare under sail.
Missed the point completely, again. The first sentence written in response to Chiggy’s comments was; “The original WSIM was a moderately decent game, but as a historical simulation it was, to be very kind, highly inadequate.” This isn’t about the status of WSIM as a game. It is about WSIM as a historical game. It is the former. It is a very, very poor version of the latter.
