I don't know ship, but I know physics. Actually for the anchoring, in strong current and full speed, it would only slow down the ship and can't do strategic manuver like stalling move in youplay. I know my comment may sound boring. But we are simulate real sea battle but not movie's CGI. Just my 2 cents. .
WSIM has nothing to do with physics! Just kidding, but kind of true also. Many have noted that what happens in WSIM wouldn't have happened in real life and vice versa. Which is why we've tried to stay as true to the original boardgame rules as possible.
That said, I rarely use anchoring of any kind. It is useful for letting ships drift closer, as Electro noted. It's also kind of fun to swing around someone who has anchored in traffic.
Anyway, if it's causing other problems, I'm okay with undoing anchoring. I didn't realize so many scenarios didn't allow anchoring and I don't recall it being much of a factor in games when I was a young stud. An anchoring option at game creation is a good idea, but I agree it should stop drifting.
