The +5 bonus is monstrous even at extreme range (and it's pretty easy to get a rake at extreme range).

I looked at my version of WS&IM and the rake bonus is +1 across the board regardless of the number of guns. Do I have an older/newer version of the rules than what we're playing or is this a bug?

This is an old problem... really, I don't know why... but here, ships have a devastating firepower who boosts the rake bonus to unbearable proportions... the real ships had much less guns... loook down: "1" ships come from the scenario in rulebook, "2" ships are from this on-line game -

How to read this ? Here ships are modified like this:

Guns + 100%
Hull + 50%
Riggings + 0
Crew + 100%

(as pointed out in bold), only the poor Conquerant was modified like this:

Guns + 100%
Hull + 50%
Riggings - 30% (and more badly arranged)
Crew + 80%

The net result of this change is a devastating firepower (+100%) not balanced by more ships "boxes" (hulls get +50%, but if a player concentrates fire to riggings the ships have no gain).

Moreover the tactical effects of loosing a gun or a crew box under fire is basically cut in half (to hit a crew or a gun is now worthless).

Finally the doubled rake bonus force the game toward parallel lines, breakthroughs are a suicide.

Just one last note about the Conquerant... Why ???
