Maybe this rake bonus is high, but this bonus is explained in the rules with plenty of details. Give it a read.

That's funny. I must have a different version of the rules or something. My quick reference chart (at least) has a +1 rake bonus regardless of number of guns.
Go with the rules definitely.
The rake bonus you are thinking of is from the advanced rules, the gun factors are given in two values eg 2(6)where 2 is the factor for normal shots and the 6 is for rake(25 guns at range 4), the +1 you refer to is the additional modifier for a stern rake (the stern is flat not pointy like the bow, large amounts of it is glass(captains quaters) and therfore a stern rake was more devastating than a bow rake)
My only niggle with this is that the rake bonus is constant to the range, as as the distance increases , the added damage from firing into the "vunarebles" would be offset with the amount of misses to to a small target area.
