Yes you are right about "As you've seen, it's handled differently here. The ship remains as an obstacle to movement but not guns, an inconsistency others have noted.".
What do you prefer this system or the original rules? Consider that no drift is still implemented and it may be impossible to avoid a surrended ship!

Having forced a 1st rate to strike in game#13045, I can see both sides of this. I currently have a british ship bottle up behind the struck ship. If he sails upwind to get out, I tear out his last sail (leaving him no valid broadside and unable to rotate or move).
A side effect of all ships blocking firing may lead to more open manoeuvering in order to fire around destroyed ships (and also makes "blocker" escorts more viable to give cover to slower ships.
In scenarios such as the pirate games, it could generate more draws as a ship gets blocked in and the enemy ships are likewise unable to manoeuvre for a clear shot around the sunk allies.
Personally I'm in favour of either a valid/valid or invalid/invalid for moving/firing to keep things consistant. (BTW I also like the idea of removing the rake bonus at 6+ ranges from another thread as well since the rules have diverged anyway) |
