Am I missing something?
If a ship is sunk it shouldn't hinder your movement.
I see in the rules it says the ship is still afloat. But in my opinion if your hull is completely destroyed the should eventually sink?
Thoughts? According to the original rules, the ship is in such danger of sinking that the crew must devote itself fulltime to preventing that, so the ship surrenders by striking her colors. There was only a small chance that a ship would actually sink or even explode (again, according to the original rules). As you've seen, it's handled differently here. The ship remains as an obstacle to movement but not guns, an inconsistency others have noted. So, no, you're not missing anything. It's just something different from the board game that you need to be aware of and adapt to. Hope that helps.
I concur, Bill. When a ship is struck, it still remains an obstacle to movement. If sinking, the remaining crew would divest the ship of any extra weight, such as guns, shot, and other heavy items.
When playing miniatures, I regard struck ships as obstacles to shooting as well. Sorry that is not addressed here, but, oh well! They are still floating, after all, and a surrendered enemy being fired on would be a breach of military etiquette. Drifting would be a pain.
The advanced rules due make allowances for sinking, towing, and exploding, but those are more advanced. I prefer these simplified rules, but they are still evolving. I trust Alex and Nick in the work they are doing with this site, and refuse to bitch about what should be, or shouldn't be. It IS a game.
And I know somebody is going to post about how unhistoric the game is in tactical combat! |
