Message text Games like this are based on a combination of luck and skill. I've been on the giving and receiving side of lucky rolls before, but as long as the randomizer is working O.K., eventually everything evens out. Perhaps one ship will get pounded in a single game, but I think making shots too predictable will ruin the game. Already, too many of my games are turning into a stalemate where neither side is willing to move close enough to risk a shot because we have both calculated the potential damage and don't want to risk it. If we could predict the damage with near absolute certainty, many people would never take a risk the entire game.
In the end, I think the random dice rolls are more realistic--a gunner has a nervous twitch at the last second and accidently shifts the aim; a wave slaps the side of the ship roughly and jostles the guns; a cannonball just happens to hit in a critical spot, etc. Battles do have an element of randomness to them, and the dice rolls help mimic that. I worry that flattening the dice rolls out would ruin the game. |
