AIR, that blue rudder jam chit is bugged as far as enforcing you to move in the required direction. The engine damage application is certainly incorrect; that conversion would only apply if you were being attacked head-on.
There remain at least a couple of persistent bugs related to damage. Occasionally, planes are reported to be shot down by an observer when flying 1-seaters, for instance.
