News October 24th 2023: Some Hardware Updates The hardware, and some of the supporting infrastructure, that You Play It runs on is showing its age. I've made plans to replace some of these components over the next few months.
For those that care: The server software is Windows Server 2019 and SQL Server 2019. Thats all good. It runs as a HyperV virtual machine on an older sever I've had now for several years. That server hardware has done well, but it's old, a Dual Xeon E5-2620 with 64G of Ram and 16 spinning disks (with 2 SSD's for boot). Back in 2012 when it was brand new, it was top of the line. These days most laptops have more single thread power. Servers operate a bit differently, so because of the dual CPU's and Memory banks, it still runs well as a server with multiple VMs and processes. However, it also pulls a lot of power, and so the battery back up has to be significant. So that UPS is the other component that needs replacement, its even older, from 2006. I just replaced the batteries because when I took a look at a modern equivalent replacement, it was over $3K. (so I bought some batteries for $110.)
The point here is, I'm going to replace both the server and the UPS. Good news is that a modern i9 with the right mobo will be 10x the performance of that dual Xeon, use a lot less power, and so a smaller UPS could be used. I'm guessing the total cost will be around $5K to replace what cost over $15K back when they were new. Let me be clear, You Play It is not the only thing I run on this. YPI probably accounts for about 20% of the compute resources.
YPI, and my other sites, are my hobby, I enjoy it, but it can sometimes get expensive. So, if you were thinking about donating, this might be a great time.
Look for more announcements when I get closer to implementation.
