Years ago on the south west side of Hong Kong Island where my aunt had a flat, we could watch all sorts of US Navy assets going in/out of the harbor. I have seen anything from the usual supply ship to nuclear submarines and a CV once. When I come to think of it, someone with a low tech field gun or rocket launcher could have taken a shot at them passing by.

Funny you should mention that. When we took the hydrofoil to Macau there was a carrier visiting and anchored in the harbor. That night every bar in the city was packed with Americans sailors. The night before they were empty. I got my then-girlfriend out of there!

I used to work with the Navy a lot and got to go on a carrier one time. It was in port, so they weren't doing flight ops, but the planes were still onboard. I'm a ship and airplane nut, so I was in heaven. You just can't imagine how big those things are until you're standing beside one on the dock and it looms overhead like a building or you're standing on the flight deck. I also got to go onboard a special ops submarine once and one of the old World War II vintage battleships (USS Iowa while it was still active duty). Too cool. A nice place to visit, but I wouldn't want to live there!

Even though I am a military and plane nut as well, no such luck for me other than those at the air shows. I mean the air shows before the 9/11 2011.

Back then and until the mid 90s, CFB Trenton (Trenton, Ontario) used to have their own air shows. While everybody else were safety conscious by then, they did give a hoot since it is a military airshow. You can stand right up to the taxiway and feel the heat from the (fighter) jet engines when they taxi by. They also go up to the Mach 1 when they do fly by. However they have not done it since Canadian troops were deployed to Afghanistan since CFB Trenton is the main transport hub for the military.

However the biggest "eye opener" I have as an airplane/airport nut is working inside an airport when I worked for a surveying companion in the 90s. I am not talking about the terminals. I am talking about driving and walking on taxiways and runways. You know the TV / Home theatre salesmen are full of BS when they tell you their sound system can replicate the effect of a 747 taking off. They may be able to get the loudness but they can never create the vibrations that shakes your whole body up when you have 4 jet engines roaring at full power beside you. I have driven up to 200km/h on a closed off runway as well. BTW The El-Al planes have extra security personnel of their own.
