I spent a week in Hong Kong in 1992. Landing at the airport was like a fighter jet avoiding a missile as we flew around the buildings right beside the airport. And the anchored ships seemed to go on forever.

You must to talking about the Runway 13 approach that use the checkerboard on the side of the hill where the middle marker of the ILS is. The planes have to make a 47 degree right turn to line up with runway. If they miss, they just have to climb. The reverse approach on Runway 31 is straight from the sea but if you abort in too late, you will have to climb and make the left turn. Failure to do so will mean fly into the hills.

I am already living in Toronto by then...

That sounds right. There are videos on youtube... Kai Tak airport, right? There's a new one now. Did you leave because of the Chinese takeover? That was a big topic when we were there since it was only a few years before it happened.

Cool city. I'm not a big city guy, but I loved looking across the harbor, especially at night. The clash of English and Chinese was really unique. We took a hydrofoil to Macau and toured all over. I loved it. I still have one of those vertical hanging landscape prints I bought there hanging in the computer room.

I left before the take over and went back couple of times. Since I have here too long, I don't miss that place like others I know.

Years ago on the south west side of Hong Kong Island where my aunt had a flat, we could watch all sorts of US Navy assets going in/out of the harbor. I have seen anything from the usual supply ship to nuclear submarines and a CV once. When I come to think of it, someone with a low tech field gun or rocket launcher could have taken a shot at them passing by.
