My goal was to use the Basic Games' concepts and bring them forward to the Advanced Game without all the confusion of the original rules which tried to deal with 5 fields of fire but failed to thoroughly define them. In the end Avalon Hill allowed for ships to "rifle" their broadsides, either shooting ONLY into fields 4 and 5, OR, completely ignoring closer ships in fields 4 and 5.
Neither of those options work for me.

I've reviewed the original rules and indeed they seem to have some inconsistency, for example:
Rule VIII.A.5.d.1 says I can fire bow guns at a target straddling fields 2 and 4 when there is closer target on field 4, while VIII.A.5.a says that if a target lies on field 2 you can only fire if it's the closest target.
Even if we take VIII.A.5.d.1 as an exception to rule VIII.A.5.a, it would be quite weird that you can fire at a target straddling 2-4 if there's a closer target on 4 but you cannot fire at it anymore if instead of straddling the target is completely on field 2.

I think Derek's Field Of Fire rules resolve this inconsistency, probably fill other gaps of the original rules and they also seem to follow the spirit of the original rules.

So I'd say Derek's Field of Fire rules will be used when we'll implement Advanced Field of Fire.
