My goal was to use the Basic Games' concepts and bring them forward to the Advanced Game without all the confusion of the original rules which tried to deal with 5 fields of fire but failed to thoroughly define them. In the end Avalon Hill allowed for ships to "rifle" their broadsides, either shooting ONLY into fields 4 and 5, OR, completely ignoring closer ships in fields 4 and 5.
Neither of those options work for me.
