Even when there are no enemies immediately around, it's a good idea to tail friendlies when able. This allows you to stick together in a loose formation and gang up on the enemy more effectively once they are in range.
In opening moves, it is wiser to fly slow and see where your team members are heading, rather than opening the throttle and blazing off by yourself. Scattered flights are more easily slaughtered.
