If you retire off your own map edge, your points are not halved. In league games, your counted as retiring without honor, so you're giving more VP to the opposing team.

Thanks for the reply. I seem to remember getting a warning message stating my score would be halved when I looked at plotting a move off the friendly side. My memory may be in error though so I guess I will just have to try to plot such a move in some game and see if I get a warning message.
