For what it's worth, I just got shot down in game 633141 (http://www.youplay.it/play/GameMove.asp?GameID=633141&GameType=BM ) due to this bug. I took one red chit of damage and drew a "Rudder jams" chit and so losing my last point of tail structure. This was despite the fact that I was facing directly at my attacker (alas, with jammed guns).

From the observer's perspective, his shot was at a deflection. I think that's the part of all this where you haave a "disconect" per the Rules explanation.

What I ment was that the observer's firing platform is moving laterally in relation to the oncoming target making the shot a deflected shot for the gunner/observer. I think that's the way that was interperted in the orig. boardgame rules(?) We might drop a note to Phil Hall for his perspective on the issue.
If the rules were interperted the way I think you are reading them;any attack coming from any hex within the observer's arc of fire would be a "no deflection shot" for the observer. That would make the obsv. VERY deadly to enemy engines creating perhaps an inordinant number of gliders. I'm pretty sure the designer's intent was that only direct nose on tail and tail on nose shots were to be at 'no deflection'.

I didn't see the actual board position - but as I understand it the dead ahead to dead behind is the only time the observer gets a shot without deflection. And the 'tail damage becomes engine damage' rules are (I think) only applied to shots without deflection.
