By the way, ships surrender without riggings just like regiments surrender if encircled... both of them can still shoot... and both of them cannot escape!
Moreover, look at the age of sails... crews are usually "forced" to join the navy like paying the king's coin (or putting a coin -as first payment- in the pocket of a drunken sailor and so recruiting him as a volunteer)
