Yes, that would be nice, IF the ships are equal distance as you say the were in your case. As the original rules for the board game said you had to shoot at the closest ship off a given broadside.

The only hassle is implementation. Without adding another phase, and making games twice as slow, you would have to pre-pick the target, and, if another ship moves closer, you may not even shoot! Pre-picking is bad in my opinion.


Actually the computer could do this based on what HDT table the target ships could do against you. Thus as a heavy gunned ship takes losses, the computer knowing that it cant fire anymore will switch targeting to a more threatening ship.

Thus while the computer would still call the shots, it would do it better.

Or maybe even a choice by the player as to what selection basis to use. Like HDT, or Weakest hull, or Strongest Hull. Weakest crew or strongest crew.

This would give multiple choices for players and still allow the computer to handle the details. All it would take is pull down box at the top of your ship list and just call different subroutines based on that selection.

That way you don't get into a guessing game as to who will move closest etc.
