Yes, that would be nice, IF the ships are equal distance as you say the were in your case. As the original rules for the board game said you had to shoot at the closest ship off a given broadside.
The only hassle is implementation. Without adding another phase, and making games twice as slow, you would have to pre-pick the target, and, if another ship moves closer, you may not even shoot! Pre-picking is bad in my opinion.
