There are a couple reasons why the ship might not fire. One is another friendly ship at a closer range on the same broadside, effectively blocking your shot.
I'm guessing that my problem was this flaw in the rules. The friendly wasn't blocking the shot at all - it was way over on one edge of the field of fire, and nowhere near the line of fire to the target. It's just a bad rule, and since it makes no logical sense I only understood the written rule after trying to figure out why my ships weren't firing as expected.
Believe me, I discovered the load-only-one-side-per-turn limitation very early on.
IIRC, another odd thing I've encountered is when it says during a game that a ship is without rigging and "will surrender if raked", but it never surrenders when raked - you still have to kill it by reducing hull, guns or crew to zero. |
