If England isn't a country why does wikipedia start with:
"England (i /ˈɪŋɡlənd/) is a country that is part of the United Kingdom."
Please note that the new world encyclopedia entry for England states:
"England is often mistakenly considered the same as the United Kingdom, or the same as the island of Great Britain, which consists of England, Scotland, and Wales."
I believe you fall into that mistaken belief that England the Country and the United Kingdom are the same place.
Oh, lonely planet states that England is a country.
