To see the problem you want to wait the site to fade out for lack of players?
I mentioned it a long time ago - the Leagues have hindered the site insofar as attracting new players. If you visit a gaming site, and don't see any games to play, are you sticking around to figure out the site or moving on to a site that seems more active? So many players have gone to just playing League games that there are typically very few Pending games to greet new players. In addition to that, many of the Pending games are Password games that visitors can't get into.
However, the comparison to the number of Active players between 12/2007 and 10/2010 is likely skewed by other factors. A lot has happened in the world in the past 3 years, particularly the financial meltdowns. Players who have lost their jobs or their homes are not as likely to have fun playing games online. Players who have found new employers may not feel comfortable playing online games during work or lunch hours as they had in the past.
I think the combination of a lack of new blood (from the lack of open games) and the increase of "retirements" (temporary or permanent, by choice or necessity) is what has made the most difference. Whether it is a headline issue or not is debatable.
