In large games with many planes, for example, it would make it much quicker to make a move by knowing right where you are rather than having to scroll down to see what you're flying and then back up to appraise the situation.
Nice idea; I usually try to pick the same 1-2 paint jobs when I sign up for new games so I can find myself at a glance
