I also don't like CAPTCHA, but we were under attack, there were tons of registred users all with fake data that never logged in and with many other tipical characteristic of 'computer generated data'. 
So I was force to add the CAPTCHA. I will tune it in the next days, to avoid problems with already active users.
But for now, I will keep the check also in profile change pages, to avoid the attack continue.
