So when you shot grapeshot in the game you get a "-" modifier, the larger the ship the larger the negative modifier. In the board game the chart is the same but in the game the -number isn't a 'to hit' modifier, it's the number of crew killed by the grapeshop ... so a '-4' isn't -4 to hit it's '4 enemy crew killed'.

In the game here it seems that it's a to hit modifier. At least that's the way I understand it.

Is this a glitch in the system, a deliberate rules modification, or am I not understanding correctly?

Example: Victory aimed at Exeter's Hull, Hdt:-2 (Full Guns:4,Captured:-2,Ammo:-4) unable to fire.

I will take a look. Any vets here know the answer?

The game (here) calculates grapeshot correctly from what I've seen. Just so others know, grapeshot is handled a little differently. The hit table you end up on is the number of crew squares killed, NOT the hit table to roll a die against. So if it's zero, nothing happens. The -4 modifier moonglum mentioned is a modifier/penalty for using grapeshot, not the crew squares killed. It goes into the overall calculation, so in the given example, it totalled up to HDT -2, which means no crew squares are hit. That's correct and per the boardgame rules.

Grapeshot has its uses, especially if the target ship is in melee and you can score a rake, but you have to check the charts to see if it will even be effective because of the big penalty. And the range is only one, so that alone limits its use. Since other shot types (round, chain, etc) can also produce crew hits, you might be better off using that on the higher table. And you have to remember to change the ammo type when it's no longer useful, so it's easy to forget and miss shots that could be doing some damage.
