The big ones still pack a punch! The crew section loss is not used for a captured ship. Use the -2 "Capture Ship" modifier instead regardless of how many crew sections are lost. Plus, that was an initial broadside with a lot of guns, so the rest won't be quite so lethal.
It's good you're looking at the HDT, though, but in this case it's right.
