Since crew are killed off starting with the first section, it would be nice to be able to leave a partial section behind to fire a gun while the rest board.

It seems to make sense that you should be able to do that, but we've always tried to follow the original boardgame rules where possible, and that rule is very clear. I don't know the rationale for taking the sections in order -- maybe it's dealing with the chaos of the smoke and noise in a battle situation. So if boarding parties were ordered and you were in section 1, you answered the call.
