OK, moving on to turn 9, Cruelty of the Seven Seas shot at Bretagne through the friendly surrendered ship ... so it appears that surrendered ships don't block anybody's field of fire (friend or enemy)...

Maybe I'm missing something, but the wording of the rules seems off: "If the closest ship happens to be a friendly or surrendered ship, the field of fire is blocked and the ship may not fire that broadside in that turn."

The rule is inaccurate. It's true for the boardgame, but as you've seen, the online version does allow shooting through struck ships. I usually maintain the rules pages, so I'll make a note to change that soon. Note that if a ship surrenders some other way (lack of crew, guns, etc.) it DOES block firing, so it's inconsistent, but one of the "house rules" here you just have to get used to.

Thanks for pointing that out. If anyone else notices inaccuracies in the rules, please post them or let me know privately.
