OK, moving on to turn 9, Cruelty of the Seven Seas shot at Bretagne through the friendly surrendered ship ... so it appears that surrendered ships don't block anybody's field of fire (friend or enemy)...
Maybe I'm missing something, but the wording of the rules seems off: "If the closest ship happens to be a friendly
or surrendered ship, the field of fire is blocked and the ship may not fire that broadside in that turn."
