Ahhh, of all of the time of the year to visit Florida and all of the tourist traps, it's either May or October. You could even take in a Wargame Convention. Even better, you could play Wooden Ships & Iron Men tournament at this convention, while the wife and kids visit DisneyWorld (also called the Rat Trap). Anyway, here's the deal.
HMGS is a Florida gaming group devoted to miniatures. During the course of the year, they host several tournaments, and most of recent vintage have been held in Orlando, including Recon, May 2-4th, 2008. It's well attended, and the venue being the Holiday Inn places it right down the road from the aforementioned attraction, plus many others.
One thing of interest to readers of this site is that I will be hosting a 3-event WS&IM tournament, using my collection of 1/2000 scale Valiant Napoleonic ships. 2 events on Saturday will feature up to 16 players each, and the final event on Sunday will feature the 4 top scorers from Saturday's events for the prizes (still to be determined). Recon of '06 provided the genesis of this site's Havana scenarios, but the nature of the tournament format precludes any worthwhile scenarios resulting this year.
I simply thought this might be of interest, should anyone find themselves in Florida during this time. For further information on Recon, '08, please visit

Seriously, though, if you visit Florida, May is perfect: the weather gets warm to hot in the daytime, and the nights still get down to the 60s, and it seldom rains. The monsoons don't begin for another month or two. October is good too, when the kids are back to school, but the weather is sometimes not as accomodating.
Due to an unfortunate misunderstanding between myself and the event organizers, this WS&IM tournament is also being called the Trident Cup. Trust me, this is stricly incidental, as I had no intention of this happening. I will try to have it changed if possible, but that's the way it is for now. Simply FYI.
Thanks for the information, this is tempting. May won't work out, but I can at least dream about October... I'll check the website!
