Sometimes games are ended but still need some finishing touches. To avoid endless rake-into-the-rigging battles, a new surrender option could be inserted.

A player with immobilized ships could surrender without loosing his points, the opposing side gets the points for the surrendering ships awarded. This would only be allowed if all players agree.

Questions:
  • If the player is the only surviver of that side; surrendering will be easier. What if he has teammates? Can he surrender or not?

  • Since we don't have target selection, can those ships be shot at? (In Basic game the opponent can still shoot at a ship that was abandoned.)

  • The player is in one of those 16 players game. His ship has lost all the riggings (or close to) but remain afloat. The current battle are far away and there is no way the player can move or drift there. If he surrenders, he will mess up the score of his team. Can we give an option to retire with honor? Kind of like Blue Max.

  • Hey Hubert,

you need to read my post before answering.
He surrenders without loosing his points. That means his teammates get the points awarded.

A surrendered ship can never be fired at. That would be cruel, wouldn't it? Abandoned ships are different than surrendered ships (for whatever reason). Don't mix them up.

Retire with honor was what I had in mind.

None of any of this would be necessary if the "capture" rule were ever implemented (as brought up in our Google doc. Nick sent me an email acknowledging the need for this implementation, but they have a lot going down all at the same time. I haven't heard back on the progress they were making in addressing some of the bugs uncovered during our test team sessions. Steve and I were doing a "laboratory" game a while back, and we were finding things changing right in the middle of the game, so work is ongoing.

If capture were available, surrendering ships could still be captured. Yes, it would hurt your own team, as it currently does (perhaps why it is currently the case), but would solve a lot of aggravations.

Bottom line: Don't play with "Surrender Monkeys". They certainly hear about it from me, and usually end up as non-participants later. I've been so pissed before about harmful surrendering (and not for just myself) that I've actually named some of them publicly on this site. Yes, surrendering is admittedly a useful option, but not if it hurts other people.

Unfortunately, capture would still hurt your own team, unless you were well outside the battlezone and no enemy could approach you upwind. Remember, as stated above: surrendered ships could still be captured.

Sometimes, it's just ignorance. One guy surrendered once because he had to go out of town for a week. Once his explanation had been submitted, and alternatives shown indicating that surrendering was too drastic in such cases, he learned. He has continued playing, has gotten pretty good, and has not surrendered since.

That's my 2 cents. Now I'm broke until my insurance check arrives the 24th.
