I'm not an expert in naval warfare... so could someone explain the logic of the rake bonus to me?

TIA

I personally think the rake bonus should be *halved* if the shot comes from the bow. There the timbers are the thickest, as opposed to the galleries and light bulkheads of the stern

On the other hand, a rake through the bow aimed at the rigging has a chance of cutting the forestays and the bowsprit, leaving the ship very much without maneuverability.

So I would say, for bow rakes, no bonus against the hull, but apply the usual bonus for shots aimed at rigging.
