I think there might be a bug in the PREVIEW scenario option. Check the ships on the french side.
If you get encircled, you are dead, the tricks here is:
for the navy, escape in the right way
for the pirates, encircled as quick as possible.
Really challenging for the pirates commander to position his/her ships in the right structure.
