Hello;

I am not sure if this has been discussed or not, but Raking is too powerful the way the rules are at this point.

Raking out to maximum range anywhere in the bow/stern arc is absurd and no where even close to realistic. Raking should at the minimum be limited to 5 hexes and only along the row of hexes extending forward/aft from the bow/stern hexes only.

Raking is supposed to represent firing down the length of a ship and from the little bit of reading I have done on naval warfare in this time frame hard to achieve. Yet, in this game, raking occurs regularly and easily.

================
An extreme example: Game 436507, turn 4

As you can see Gibraltar is firing at Formidable and getting the raking modifier. Gibralter is at maximum range (10 hexes) and on the extreme limit of the bow arc.
================

Actually, now that I am writing this out and thinking a tad more. Raking should have a negative hit table modifier but a positive die roll modifier for rolling on the resultant hit table. After all the bow/stern of a ship is a smaller target than the broadside but any actual hit has a great chance to do damage due to the cannonball traveling down the greater length of the ship. But it should still be limited to range 5 at the maximum.

Thanks;

Lobster
