As promised, I questioned the GDs, Nick and Alex, regarding the forthcoming release of an "Official" League format. These are their replies:

Nick replies: "league are inteded as little tournaments, so no squadron management is allowed.

"I had many request for squadron management, but is not an easy task
and with the little time I have to work on the site, I prefer to
concentrate to open issues (WS&IM).

"What you'll have in the first instance is the simple league system
currently used for other games. Then we can discuss other features,
but only and if when WS&IM development is closed."
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
And Alex replied: :"My understanding is that when WSIM will be moved to the main site the code for managing leagues will be the same for Blue Max and WSIM. There's an important difference between the two games, that I do not know how will impact. The difference is that in WSIM you can have many players commanding more ships. In BM 1 player = 1 plane."

So, it sounds as if the intended league system will not be as extensive as our current Trident Cup Competition. While that remains to be seen, for now we can expect the TCC to remain the only competitive program of its type on the site.
