Ok, two things. In general, the game tries to follow I believe the original boardgame rules. In those rules, VIII.A.4.a says closest ship. So, that would be the "correct" rule. BUT, it does say if there is a tie, you can pick which ship of the ones that are tied for closest.

So, I would agree with you if there is a tie. Not sure of the logic, but, that was the original rule for what it is worth.


i recall bringing this up once before and i agree it would be great to be able to chose which target you are gonna shoot at...there have been times when two ships are equidistant and the game decides which is the target contrary to how i would chose which to shoot at

the rule itself is kind of open to debate as well...not many captains will have to decide which to shoot at...a 28 guns frigate at 2 hexes range or a 110 guns SOL at 3 hexes
